Gender Based Analysis of Selected Tobacco Control Policy Initiatives in Pakistan

Gender Based Analysis of Selected Tobacco Run Programs in Pakistan is an International Development Research Center's (IDRC) funded research project. This is a pioneer project of this nature in Pakistan and through this project we aim to decrease the ever increasing number of female smokers in Pakistan through carrying out a gender based analysis of policies and programs aimed at tobacco control and to identify gaps that lead to failure of tobacco control within the female population in Pakistan.

This project will assess the effects, impacts and ramifications of Pakistan's Comprehensive Tobacco Control Initiatives on the diverse female population of Pakistan. Pakistan is a developing country with an astounding population of almost 160 million people. Out of these almost 50% are women. Currently Pakistan is on the brink of facing a devastating health and economic disaster as the use of tobacco is rising steeply amongst its youth especially young girls and women. This sharp rise in women smokers in Pakistan is a a clear indication that the policy makers, legislators and tobacco control organizations are currently not running gender sensitive tobacco control initiatives in the country.

Under this project WELDO shall be carrying out a comprehensive review of the existing literature related to the selected areas of tobacco control policy, legislation, programs and initiatives.

In this regard WELDO would also like to involve other organizations working in Pakistan to submit their research reports, publications, reviews etc on tobacco related research. All organizations and researchers submitting their publications will receive appropriate representation in the framework that WELDO intends to develop.

For more information on this project contact us at gba@weldo.org.

How is Vitiligo Diagnosed in USA and worldwide patients?
Related to country: Pakistan

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

If a doctor suspects that a person has vitiligo, he or she usually begins by asking the
person about his or her medical history. Important factors in a person's medical history are
a family history of vitiligo; a rash, sunburn, or other skin trauma at the site of vitiligo 2
to 3 months before depigmentation started; stress or physical illness; and premature (before
age 35) graying of the hair. In addition, the doctor will need to know whether the patient or
anyone in the patient's family has had any autoimmune diseases and whether the patient is
very sensitive to the sun. The doctor will then examine the patient to rule out other medical
problems. The doctor may take a small sample (biopsy) of the affected skin. He or she may
also take a blood sample to check the blood-cell count and thyroid function. For some
patients, the doctor may recommend an eye examination to check for uveitis (inflammation of
part of the eye). A blood test to look for the presence of antinuclear antibodies (a type of
autoantibody) may also be done. This test helps determine if the patient has another
autoimmune disease. All examinations and tests for any disease like vitiligo in USA and many
countries are exact and less expensive or free.

Reduce Use of plastic
Related to country: Pakistan

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Plastic goods are very usefull to us because these are low cost then wood and cloth, more reliable means unbracable and unleakable so and so but I as economist see this from different angle: No doubt plastic is very usefull and cheap material but it cause very serious health implication which as whole incerse the cost pof sing plastic, whic is the sum of purchasing cost and the health cost (Purchase of medicines, doctor fee and tarvelling costs etc.) so I request you all to reduce the use of plastic goods in life.

Where there is Smoke
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

'World No Tobacco Day' has been marked here, as it has been around the world. NGOs forming a coalition against tobacco have staged a walk; at seminars the dangers of the substance have been highlighted and Pakistan Railways has taken a big leap forward by banning smoking on its trains. But is the battle against tobacco really being won? Statistics indicate that smoking is growing in Third World countries even as levels drop in the developed world. The reasons are linked to the fact that awareness campaigns mean people in the west are less likely than before to take up the habit. This means that for giant companies who earn profits at the cost of health, the parts of the world where people have less access to information now offers the most lucrative markets.

Has enough been done in our country to discourage tobacco? The fact is that while laws have come in, restricting sales to juveniles or smoking in public places, implementation has been very poor. There is also a need for more aggressive effort to drive home the message about tobacco. Cigarettes and the 'sheesha' which has arrived over the last decade remain something of a fashion statement for the young and trendy. Health of course is rarely an issue teenagers think deeply about. There is also a growing rate of smoking among young women. Somewhere, despite the warnings on cigarette packets and the other efforts made, there has not been as much success as we would like to see. Surveys show people remain willing to ignore warnings. The WHO campaign for pictures as well as words on the warning labels is one we need to take up, given the high rate of illiteracy – and the fact that often, quite literally, pictures drive home messages where sentences fail. We also need to focus on spreading the 'no tobacco' message among children. They after all are the smokers of the future; in many cases they also have been able to dissuade parents who smoke. This then is a group that needs to be targeted in a more focalized manner, so that in the coming years we can have a society where tobacco is less commonplace than what is currently the case.

"NO TO WAR"
Related to country: Pakistan

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

This is a matter of great concern not only for Pakistan but for the entire globe. It has started just after the 9/11 sad incidence which took the lives of many inocent humans, and shock the whole world that the so called super power could have so low security level in their own country, the failure of which resulted disturbace throughout the world. Firstly the US struck with massive power and demolished those areas of Afghanistan where still there is no facility of electricity, no phone facility and people are stpending their lives below poverty level. The US failed to accomplised operation by not capturing the most wanted people e.g Osama Bin Ladin, Maula Omar etc. beside having all the latest technology of sattelite and support of allied forces. Which resulted in the migration of escaped people from Afghanistan to Pakistan.
Unfortunately finally the same operation started with the help of Pakistan Army but this time not in the tribal areas of Pakistan but settled area of beautiful swat valley and surroundings, where 3 million peace loving pushtoons left their homes with zero level refugee arrangements by the Pakistan government, which unfortunately is in the hands of supreme currupt leaders, because of which we feel extremely ashamed of being Pakistani. Lets suppose if the US and Pakistan again failed in their plan and the so called terrorists again escape from here, then which country's peace will be in stake, and if again the US failed there which country next, and so on............
This message is for all the peace loving brothers and sisters in the world to peace step ahead not with your weapon as gun but with your pen or key board as your weapons. Express and share your feelings with your neighbours, friends, colleuges, upload via internet to save the world against the war, we should discourage the killing of any single citizen of the world in any shape. May be one single word written or spoken by us today may save thousands of precious lives tomorrow.
so please lets say " NO TO WAR " and provide a much peaceful environment to our upcoming generation.
